i just moved into a new apartment and the living room isn't as big as the previous place. but the bedrooms are a little bigger. I have a 55g tank. anybody else keep a tank of that size in there bedrooms? the tanks are almost silent, the only noise is the water trickling from the AC300 and the EMP400.
i would just hate to set it up in the bedroom and not like it....anybody have an experiences with tanks in there bedrooms?

have a 30 long and a 10g. The impeller noise can be distracting when I'm watching TV, but other than that it's fine. I make sure I top off the water though, as the hubby doesn't like the constant waterfall noise, I find it rather soothing myself.

Drake,
I have kept a 55 gallon Plant tank in my bed room at my old apartment and it was incredible. I had no problems with it, and the stand matched my decor so it wasn't and eye sore. I am currently tossing the idea of placing my 75 gallon in my new place. Possibly turning it into a reef tank. But for right now, i have a 15 gallon endler tank, a 10 gallon gambusia tank and a 2.5 het tank in my bedroom.

I have a 38gallon and a 10gallon in my room (which is quite small), I think they look great. Just have to keep your room a little more tidy than usual :).

I have a 20gal. in my room. Only complaint is when the water is low I can't sleep because of the "trickling?" sound. Easy solution though, just keep it topped off. When i get my 55gal., it will probably be in my room too.
*i say go for it.

I have a 90 gallon in my bedroom and am planning to put in another- and eventually double decker stands on both. We find the trickle sound of the biowheel filters relaxing- used to have a tabletop fountain to provide "white noise" but this is much, much better.

i ran out of space for tanks in my apartment, ha...so i have a 20g SW in my bedroom, and (including the turtle setup) 4 FW tanks in the guest bedroom. well, that's not really right, it's not a guest bedroom so much anymore, since the fish have become the permanent guests there.

I have a 30 and a 10 in my room. I don't mind any noise (it's kept to a minimum anyways)

I have my 29-gal in my bedroom and I love it. The water trickle (if the tank isn't topped off) doesn't bother me at all. Most of the time my husband is watching TV so I can't hear it very well and if the TV is off, it's very soothing to sleep to. My guinea pigs like to watch the fish also. In fact, having the gp's in the room is more of a problem than the fish - they take up much more room in their over 10 sq ft bachelor pad.
I've run a wide variety of tanks in my bedroom over the years without issues other than noise.
I do confess that having bedroom tanks is what turned me off on HOB filters and airstones - decades ago. Now all of my tanks and all of my filters outside the fish room must be dead silent. If I can hear it, it does not stay with the tank.

I agree with RTR, although I do not have a fish room, I'm jealous. I have a 45 gallon planted corner tank with a mated pair of angels in it in my bedroom. I had originally set the tank up with a mag350 someone had given me. The noise of that thing annoyed the hell out of me. Now, I have replaced the blasted thing with a powerhead and sponge hooked to my CO2 reactor. Even the reactor is silent. I love having the tank in my bedroom. I find it realxing to watch the angels go through their various mating rituals, and general harassment of fish a 20th their size. I still have yet to see them spawn, which was part of the motivation of moving them into the bedroom, they always seem to spawn at night for me.
The only issue for me is when I want to sleep real late after a real "early" night. Sometimes, it seems like the light of god coming to punish me for my transgressions. The Fish always know!

For the 60 Gallon in my bedroom, I had to have a Canister to keep it quite. The air defusion from an airstone is the only noise you can hear.

I always sleep with a fan blowing so that's the only sound I ever hear, anyway.
I just have a 10gallon planted tank in my bedroom/computer room with an rather noisy little AC200 HOB.

I had a 55g in my room until about 2 weeks ago. I had it up for about a year or so with no problems. I ran a canister filter to keep it quiet.

My 55 is just outside my door.I leave the bedroom door open so I can hear the water,it`s like listening to a water, fall so relaxing.I had my brother fall to sleep on my sofa watching the fish and listenen to the water. He said it felt like he was camping out by the falls.:D

I'll throw in one more "Go for it!"
Until I recently moved, I had a 55 gallon that doubled as my headboard on a custom stand. I ran dual powerheads with an undergravel filter and it was very quiet. I like to sleep with a little background 'white-noise' and the tank did not provide any of that!! Not until I added an airpump and stone, then you could hear the bubbles hitting the surface and it was very relaxing. It was really nice to be able to watch the fish after a long day and get all relaxed and not have to worry about getting up and crwling into bed since you were already there!!
Good luCk,

i'll hop in and brag a bit about my tanks as well. in my room i have:
-a 75 g half water/ half land tank with my tree frog, newts, and salamanders
-2 30 g
-2 10 g for my crickets and my leopard geckos
-a 35 hex tank with my angels
my room is pry the size of most of your bathrooms...my upstairs bathroom is actually a little larger than my room. having said all that, i don't really have any sounds from any of the tanks, except when i let the water level get too low :p

i have 3 or 4 tanks in my room its always chaing depending on what new stuff i get. but i cut mousepads to fit over the rim where the hang on filter is and that soaks up all the vibration as long as you put another piece where the leg of the filter is at the bottom. then before going to sleep i cover the top of the filter with a pillow top off the water and it is silent.

The saddest bedroom tank story must be told. A buddy of mine had a 150 filled with 10 oscars and a large cat in his b room behind his bed. It looked fantastic, until one day his room mate came home and notice the carpet wet outside his door. His tank sprung a leak and his room mate tried to save as many fish as possible and take them to a local fish store. Well needless to say all but 4 fish died and his room was wet and smelled like fish for weeks. It took him the longest time to get the oder out of the apartment. In the end, he never fixed the tank, i think it is still sitting in his garage.

sad story my tank i think it was a 30 its the free one in the classifieds on here sprung a leak 2 days ago. i came home and the water was louder than usual i go in and there was about 3 inches missing. i thought about how hot it has been here in san diego but no way 3 inches while all the other tanks were the same then i get closer and felt it. slow seam leak i didnt feel like fixing it so i picked up a brand new 40 for $40. sucks about the guys fish though. howd he get so many fish into a 150? happy my room dosn't smell fishy just a little wet. i think i will just tear out the carpet and then get the stuff they paint garage floors with i always thought that looked cool, well as cool as you can get with a bucket of paint.

I was getting all excited about the fish tanks I want to put in my room until I read those last 2 posts. I used to have tanks in my bedroom in my old house, but they were smaller (a 20 and 2 10s). The HOBs were noisy, but I'll be using cannisters if I do it again. The filstar on my 90 is silent.
I really like the idea of watching my fish in bed before I go to sleep, I just hope I'm not dreaming about fish and suddenly find myself wet from a tank leak now.

A leak is always a possibility- but I fail to see how a leak in the bedroom is any more catastrophic than a leak in the living room :D :D :D

In my bed room me and my GF are slowly building up a "wall O tanks"tm We are about too get our third 55gallon, that will finish the top layer of the wall. when it is in we are going to center our bed so the middle one is our head stand and then put another 55 on the bottom part of the two side stands.
freakin awesome headstand
it can be a little un-nerving having the fish watching...stuff though. keep expecting them to break out the score cards or something
I have a 32g acrylic with a wet/dry built into the back. The trickling sound can be a little noisy sometimes.

One thing is for sure. If you have a partner who is as passionate about fish (and not to mention helping clean the tanks), fish in the bedroom are a great thing!
...
But if your partner cannot stand them (or essentially doesn't have as strong an interest in them) ... be prepared for a few big blues! They will be able to hear each and every bubble that is produced, each peck in the substrate, every splash at the surface. If that is the case and you are prepared to go ahead with it ... good luck, but I would seriously reconsider if they do not share your hobby.
...
And yes, a number of my friends have suffered the hard way ... even with a small 10G! It was either the tank or they had to move to the spare room ... my Father could not stand my 55G in the Living room, "It was too noisy" - what a load of BS - the TV was worse.
...
Just some advice though.

I had a tank in my bedroom throughout college and remember it being VERY satisfying. It is peaceful and calming. Of course I can see how some might find the HOB noises distracting or annoying but it really depends on the person. I had my tank at the end of my bed and I used to love staring into it with all the lights off in the room and tank lights on before I went to sleep. Now I am married......I think you can guess why I dont have one in my bedroom now.(sigh)

UPDATE the leak didn't deter me from tanks in the bed room. im just getting rid of the carpet (still wet from almost a week ago) and since im downstairs imma strip it down to the cement and im going to acid stain the floors a marbly blue to look like the ocean. my mom arleady redid all the living rooms to tile because of all the dripping from water changes etc.

One more thumb up for the tank in the bedroom. If you feel you can live with the extra noise and the lights coming on in the morning (mine's on a timer), it is fabulous. My room is my kingdom and the tanks make it a great place to spend time. Love watching on a Sunday afternoon... taking a nap...
It's sort of sexy too... remember the James bond where he is in a fancy hotel with a big curved fishtank around the bed?

Not sure if this is appropriate or not but I wanted to add that a tank in your bedroom at college is a good move. It makes an excellent transition move from living room to bedroom if ya bring a lady home. "hey wanna see my fish tank?"

I have a 100g in my bedroom right now, and before taht I had 2 55g tanks in my room. The 55gs had ac500's on them, and the noise eventually became a little annoying, but I can sleep through anything ahah. With my 100g I have a eheim 2226 and a filstar xp3, and it is completely silent now. I would go with a canister filter if you don't like the noise....plus.....it's nice having the fish sleep next to you. My oscar sleeps right next to my head everynight ahah
i have my light on a timer, so when i wake up, i look over and watch my silver dollars swimmin about for a food half hour, its nice to wake up to happy fish!
Having an aquarium (or any "water" symbols) in the bedroom actually goes against the rules of feng shui. I used to have two 2.5-gallons tanks, a 5.5-gallon, AND two Eclipse System Threes in my bedroom when we were living in the apartment. It never bothered my husband unless the water level in any of the tanks got too low so the water was splashing down loudly; he'd just remind me to top off the tank in the morning. But I've always been the type of person who tosses and turns for two hours before being able to fall asleep (longer if I was ticked off about something in my life), so I don't know - when we moved into a house and I decided to leave the tanks and electronics (like T.V.)out of the bedroom, I started sleeping better. Maybe it was a "placebo effect" of sorts, since that was when I decided to try following some of the more basic rules of feng shui. But I don't think it was the noises of the filters and stuff that were keeping me awake. So if you normally have no problems sleeping and are not bothered by the sounds of filters running, I'd say go for it. It was really nice to have my two little planted 2.5-gallon tanks right next to my computer on my desk in my bedroom.

I have my 55 gallon in my room. Although there are no fish in it yet, I think it's soothing. The sound of the filter and water trickling doesn't bother me at all... I MUST sleep with the TV on. Therefore, having some additional background noise doesn't phase me in the slightest. I absolutely cannot sleep without some hint of light and noise. I shared a room with my sisters for 15 years... I guess that has something to do with it. My boyfriend doesn't mind the additional noise. He sleeps like a rock. I'm sure I'll love my tank even more once it's stocked!

the great thing about a bedroom tank is: if you spill any water during water changes, there's always a pile a dirty clothes near by to soak it up.

I've got two tens and a five in the bedroom. I must admit, the trickling would get annoying, IF I didn't HAVE to have a fan on while I sleep. The noise of the fan drowns out the noise of the water. However, the trickling is just like those mini fountains that are meant to calm and relax you. The only downside I see is having to wake up with an irresistable urge to pee!:)
Seriously, though, as said, keep it topped off and you should be fine.
