I've got convict fry in a 10g with a fluval3 filter
running at it's lowest setting. (It's the only spare
filter i have at the moment.)
Problem is some of the fry keep getting sucked into the filter
and i keep having to rescue them.
Do any of you guys have any suggestions on how
to stop this happening (like use some kind of mesh
over the filter) or should i just go out and buy a
smaller less powerfull filter.
Cheers.

Mickey i use a piece of panthose with a rubber band to hold it over the intake.never lost one yet via filter.

Little thing that always bothers me - is it ok to use the normal elastic rubber bands in the aquarium? I doesn't smell good (typical of any rubber) so I'm thinking it cannot be good for fish? No?

I have used them (rubberbands) in my tanks when I attach the hairnets to my rocks for riccia and have yet to have a problem. I've also heard of attaching a little sponge to the intake, though it is less work to just stick a nylon over it:)

Downloader has the right idea. Buy yourself one of those foam filters at your LFS. Place it around the intake tube on your fluval. Or if you could just use it and take the fluval out. If you're looking for something that offers mech and chem filtration you can purchase a small tetra power filter and place a sponge around the intake tube as mentioned before.

Firefighter all I can say is ........wow you`re the King of fishkeeping.I just saw your.... uhhhh......Tanks!!!!! ......I`m impressed to say the least

Mary... Definately not the king. I'm a peasant compared to a lot of people around here. And I'm a village idiot when it comes to the knowledge some people have. If I ever win the lottery though... I'll buy the kingdom. LOL
