Hi all getting a new tank here , i will want to plant this, my question is where i am starting fresh what do suggest for the bottom of the tank for the plants??? i was thinking a thin layer of sand - then some gravel-pebbles i want a natural look so i was thinking the sand will help the plants to root in under the gravel will this work??? any other suggestions??? thank you
What you use for substrate depends on a couple of things, starting with how much you want to spend.
One of the best substrates around is Seachem's Flourite. It is Iron rich and a complete substrate that will last for years and years. It is a compete substrate, but is expensive.
If you want a cheaper alternative you can use sand and/or regular gravel, but you don't want to go too fine with either. Sand, in finer grain has a tendency to compact and can, in the long run cause problems over time.
If you decide to use sand or gravel, many of the hobbyists use a layer of laterite on the bottom followed by your gravel of choice.
Or you can skip the laterite and go with a very(couple of handfuls spread over the bottom of the tank) thin layer of peat moss and put the gravel over top of that.
My suggestion, if it's within your means, is Flourite or similar complete substrate. You'll be glad you did in the long run.

I believe there is also a product called Schultz's Pond Soil that is available from Garden stores (schultz's website will list which stores in your area sell its prodcut). It is cheaper than flourite and I have read that many people have had success with it, though I have never used it myself.
The Schultz's is very good stuff, and very similar in makeup to Flourite. It is more porous however which makes it lighter and not as effective at holding plants. I have used it and am happy with it, but I use it in conjunction with Flourite. Using it that way will save a bunch of money. It's also marketed under the name "Profile".
Here is a good site for info of all types, and an article; Setting Up A New Planted Tank:

I also use the shultz. I strongly recommend, however, that you mix it with something heavier. If used alone it is a major pain in the butt when planting as nothing stays down.
