Hi folks.

Several weeks back I posted a question on how best to waterproof aquarium ornaments after re-painting them.

The general concensus was that I seal them using "two part epoxy sealer."

I'm now looking for more info on this... since I can't find this product.

I have found spray on acrylic, but this certainly seems wrong. I've also found a two-part, thick "pour on" product used for bar-tops. This might work, but it's ultra-high gloss, and doesn't seem right for naturalistic aquarium decor.

I can't find anything else. Should I just use plain old epoxy resin (the kind I would use for repairs), and brush it on?? This seems like it might work.

Or is there a specific product I should look for that I haven't found yet? If so, could you help me out as to where to locate it?

Thanks.

I think something like http://www.aquaticeco.com/subcategories/3048/Epoxy-Paint-1-Gallon is what you are looking for.

Thanks! Hmmm..... that does seem to be the thing. And it comes in clear. The price is a bit of a sting though, especially since S&H on a gallon of paint is going to put the whole thing well over $100.

Has anyone worked with this? Can it be mixed a little bit at a time, and the balance saved for future use? Or is it one shot and the gallons done? I need less than a pint for the project I'm doing.

I wonder if this same product is available but NOT labled for aquariums. (I'm thinking of how a huge tube of silicone is about $5..... but then when the same stuff is labeled "aquarium sealant" it's about $10 for a tiny tube.)

I have some of it for a tank I'm currently building, but have not used it yet. It looks like you can mix a little bit and save some, but i'm not sure how long you can save the remainder for.
As for other products that are similar look for Sherwin Williams epoxide HS tank liner or Rustoleum 9200 epoxy, I had difficulty finding them but you might have better luck. From what I've read any nsf 61 approved epoxy will work.

yes, you can mix a little and save some, no problem in that...

I just got some of the aquatic ecosystems paint to redo my plywood tank. I've also used a 2-part tintable epoxy resin from MAS Epoxies that I was very happy with. The resin was a little cheaper than the epoxy paint.
