i have a female green terror and a male Convict in a 55g. I am trying to add another cichlid so i can reduce the aggression between the convict and GT...Female GT is 5 inches and the Male convict is 5 inches....so what could i maybe add....

no im alright with that notion....i dont need lil baby fish everywhere....well the GT and the CON are not so aggressive towards eachother just lil bit of chasing...i just wanna know if i can add some other small cichlid to go with them or anyother type of fish...i just wanna disperse the agression around...

I don't know much about GTs, but it is my understanding that you've got yourself some tough cichlids there. Better get something else aggressive. That will not be likely to decrease aggression, though (obviously). But it will be the only thing likely to survive.

As an aside, convicts will try to mate with everything. I bet the male convict is alternating between trying to mate with the GT and swimming for his life.

I would suggest removing the convict . A 55 gallon tank is only suitable for one GT. But if you insist on housing the two together the addition of a third cichlid is not the answer. Try some dithers like giant danios or tiger barbs ect.... Do a google search on dithers to find others. Also google search GT & you will see what I am talking about.

In the long run I think you find that this setup just will not work unless they pair up. In wich case I still belive it's too small.

Adding another cichlid is not an option in that size tank - while GT are slow growers, at full adult size the GT alone will max out the 55. I would really get rid of the con and just leave it as a solo tank for the GT, maybe with a catfish of some sort, but if you must get more fish to reduce the aggression definitely go for a school of dithers as thor meeki suggested. Another cichlid will only make the problem worse in that small of a tank.

If you want to keep both, best advice would be to put a tank divider.
Adding small anything to that tank will just be adding food.

"I bet the male convict is alternating between trying to mate with the GT and swimming for his life." that’s good description of what’s going on there...

You must size the dithers to the fish in question.
If they're too small then yes they will become food.
I use dithers in both of my sa/ca tanks w/ much success. :headbang2:

I wouldn't add another cichlid, but if the aggression isn't that bad I wouldn't worry either. My eight-inch polleni chases my six-inch Red Bahia some in a 55, where they're the only tank mates. It's not that frequent though and both fish are healthy with no marks or scars. Eventually, they might not be able to withstand each other, but that's not going to happen over night. If you have that GT in there alone it's going to be a pretty boring tank for a few years, until the GT does reach a larger size, and if it's a female it's not going to get THAT big anyway. Dithers would be good, just make sure they're big enough not to be nipped to death.
