View Full Version : My platies are rubbing her side against leaves and driftwood
Both the female and the younger one is doing this frequently, although the rest of the fishes in the tank seem OK... The only adjustment I made so far is to bring up the temperature from 77F to 79F.
Should I be cocnerned/treat them in a separate tank as if they caught ick?

Sure sign of early ick. Don't move em. The whole tank needs to be treated. Start treating now. Might wanna add a bit of salt too.
Good Luck!!

Yuck...
Ok, so how should I treat them? I do have Jungle Ick Guard and Quick Cure from AP. I also have aquarium salt.
Given that the same tank also contains some otos, panda cories and albino bristlenose pl*cos, I guess I shouldn't use any salt? Half the recomended dosage for the medication? Which is better, Quick Cure or Ick Guard?
Appreciate any feedback!

I've had a lot of luck with Jungle Labs Ick Clear. Usually 1 week of treatment is all you need. Also, check the water. Make sure your nitrates or nothing else is through the roof. I believe you will have to do daily water changes, so be prepared. Hold off on the salt with the others. Just do the one week treatment and see how it goes. If you have other tanks be careful, you can transmit it to other tanks through nets, etc. Good Luck!!

Thanks for the feedback. My water levels appear to be fine, zero ammonia and nitrite - this tank has been established for few months now...
I am really debating about treating the community tank since that will probably force the tank to re-cycle. Someone suggested me to bring up the temp to around 83F to see how they handle it. Right now the tank is at 81F and no one seem stressed. No visual signs of ick either...

Are they swimming in place and just wobbling back and forth, like they're trying to swim but going nowhere?
I've treated community tanks before with no side effects. Ick can take days to show visual signs. I've had swords, platties, mollies all act like yours, scraping against objects, swimming in place and usually 5-7 days later the visual signs show up. Now if my platties even start to look like that, I treat it. Haven't lost a fish to ick yet.

Which treating methods do you use? Are you referring to the "higher than 86F" method? From what I have read, every chemical-based treatment will likely to kill all bacteria in the tank, which would re-trigger the cycling process... :( Many of the fishes in that tank will not survive through a new cycling process...
Say if I treat only the fishes that "flash" in a separate tank using chemicals, would that be sufficient? I would have thought that by now, the parasites are all over my water looking for new hosts... :(

I use the Jungle labs ick clear. I'm just giving you my experience. If I see a fish of that nature doing that, I treat the tank. I have never had a bad side effect, however, that has been my experience. I'm not an expert on this, just know what I've tried. I have tried seperate tanks befor to no avail. Ick is a pain. I've transfered it to other tanks by using the same net. Good Luck!!

Thanks for the confirmation. Assuming that you probably had some scaleless fishes in the same tank, did you use the half the recomended dosage for 2 weeks as recomended?

No full dose one week, figured if they couldn't handle that they were dead anyway. Now that you mention it, I did once lose a pictus, but he was really rough before I started the treatment, but his brother was fine. Except he comited suicide 4 weeks later. Why is it fish like to jump? lol. But seriously, Good Luck!!
