First off, I've been lurking the board for about a month or two (too bad I didn't find this place 3 years ago when I started my first tank). I've learned alot, and figured it was about time to register. I really like this place.
The background on my horror story, which is almost resolved...
I had been waiting to re paint my office / den / only room in the house that lacks a feminine touch / room, but I would have had to moved the 30 gallon tank to do so... I decieded I was long over due on moving my Bala Sharks ( 5.5" and 6.5") and pleco (about 7") along with a pair of albino cats ( 1 1/2") and 2 diamond tetras (2") into a bigger tank.
I had the perfect plan, paint half the room... bring in the 55 gallon tank, drain the 30 into the 55, and keep the fish in a 3 gallon bucket (with a fliter and air) for 2-3 days till the new tank had a chance to handle start transferring the fish...
All went well... But I was missing a lid for the 55gal. tank... I put the 30 gal. lid on it (covered about 2/3 of the tank) till the next day when I was getting my glass tops...
Sometime bettween the last fish going into the tank and 4 hours latter my 5.5" bala had jumped out! Talk about a heart break (I got him when he was 1" (all my fish I get as babies, I enjoy watching them grow ect. ect.) In a paniced state, I place a lid to an ammo crate to cover the opening... All safe...
When I awake in the AM, I find a completely BLACK tank... Somehow, my remaining bala (I assume it was him) must have jumped hard enuff to knock the ammo crate lid into the tank...
My bala, and a Diamond tetra were all that was alive... Bala later died...
about 4 weeks later (today) The only survivor is 1 diamond tetra.
This is really heart breaking because I moved all the above fish from Florida to Indiana (my current home) 18 months ago. I keep them alive and well for 2 1/2 weeks (till I got my aquarium moved)
in a 3 gallon sterlite bucket...
Anyways, Know I have a 55 gallon tank with 1 diamond tetra (cannot find anymore up here, stores say they don't can't stock them?), 7 danios (needed something to help jump start me) and a pair of rosabaros....
I am still depressed over what happened...
