havent been to the site in months, looks much better now.
OK, heres my problem: my red pacu is way too big for my tank, approx 1 foot, apparently they get very large (thats a joke). I was wondering what i can do to get rid of it besides killing it. I've tried some store but they dont want it. Any ideas/suggestions?

classified sections of internet boards, different pet stores...
maybe put an ad in a newspaper.
or you could just buy a bigger tank or build a pond :D

They dont want it? People with LARGE tanks..wants LARGE fish and dont want to wait for them to grow. MOst stores here in LA, california take in LARGE fish.
1.) Buy a LARGER tank?
2.) put it n your deep pond...if your climate is good...
3.) put a ad in your pennysaver
4.) maybe a zoo or musuem would accept him?

Anyone know how Pacu tastes? I imagine a 12incher would have some meat on it.
But seriously, I'd try around to different stores if you're in a hurry...otherwise go classifieds...preferable in a big city if you're not in one but close to one.

Pacu is suppose to be good eating. There is a professor here who is working with another university somewhere in south america I think trying to establish a "pacu farm" for human consumption... or maybe its in India, hmm i'll have to check.

We dont eat our PETS!!!! You spent time with the pacu. Do NOT EAT HIM/HER! That would be a Breach of trust. If you want to eat PACU, go to that country that eats them often and stop by their fast food places and order a McPacu sandwich. OTHERWISE, we dont eat our aquarium fish!!!!

Could also try a local aquarium or zoo. Most LFS won't accept pacu returns unless they're still very small (prolly less than 6 inches). You can also try classified ads in the paper and online, but I don't think you'll have much luck.
People who actually have the tank space for Pacus tend to buy their own very cheaply when they're at the 2-3 inch mark, and watch them grow like mad for the next year. It's not uncommon for a pacu to put on 12-16 inches in a year.
Depending on the type of pacu you have, you're gonna need at least a 240+ gallon tank if it's a red belly pacu, the suckers can hit 36 inches.
Next time don't buy fish that will outgrow your tanks - especially ones that will require you to lay out huge $$$ for a monster tank.

i dont see why you couldnt eat it.
farmers eat their cows, eat chicken, eat pigs.
whats the difference? We didnt raise our fish as food? Is it morally wrong to eat something that wasent "raised" as a food item?

Good point Slip. Although, I must say that I could never eat a fish that I've raised and grown to love....And from what I've heard, your not supposed to eat Aquarium fish cause of the chemicals we use in our tanks!(besides the whole BELOVED PET thing!) :)
I wonder if they do anything to affect the fishes meat? JungleLabs Insto-Chlor says:'For use on Aquarium fish only. Not for use on food fish.'Hmmm....This is making me curious!

The fish we keep in our aquariums are our PETS. So we have an emotional bond to them. If you raise animal as a FOOD SOURCE, then there is no emotional bond.
People eat dogs as a FOOD SOURCE.
So are you going to call the kids and say:
You: Time for dinner kids!
kids: Whats for dinner?
You: Our Dog!
We have a stronger bond to dogs as pets then as Fish as pets. Why? I dont know. But its the same deal. Fish are our Pets and dont deserve to be eaten!

And that in itself is Racism or some "ISM" Why is it ILLEGAL to eat pet dogs and not illegal to eat pet fish? Fish feel pain like dogs...

You know... if I wasn't such a clean, wholesome person on message boards, I could have some real fun with some of the statements made in this thread.
Ah, what a waste, eh? :)

I've driven a few miles to rescue these guys, so I don't have to grow them out before putting them in with my RTC. I wish I could help, but the drive would make that one expensive fish.
good luck

Welcome to the forum.:) It's always a good idea to start a new thread instead of posting a new question in an old one. As for an answer to your question, I'm sure someone will be able to help you if you start a new thread. :cool2:

moral issues aside, I would not eat aquarium fish simply because some medications that are used on fish and even some chemicals used in fish food may be bad for you.
fish are interesting, pretty to look at, and probably delicious, but we must remember not to eat our pets.

There was a chinese place that my mom and the people she worked with got good from occasionally called, buck-o-scoop. Found out a few days later why it was so cheap, low over head. Her co-workers prank called them over and over again; We want some moew gu giy pan, sum yung cat ect... they were shut down shortly there after.

We have a new WalMart in town--notorious for poor aquarial practices. First thing I checked out was fishies--Red-Belly Pacu, grows to 6 inches; Iridescent shark, 5 inches, Oscars, 8 inches, etc. I almost blew a gasket!!!
What more can we do?
