I would like to have a FW puffer, but would they work in a FW tank with South American cichlids? Anyone know?

A SA puffer (south american puffer) will do fine in an south american cichlid tank. Actually that would look very nice. some geophagus, a school of pictus cats and 3-4 SA puffers. However they do require regular trimming of their beaks, manually. Which is a really tedious task when you've had the puffers for a couple years.
your options are limited when you're going FW semi-community (cichlids) for puffers because most of the "FW" puffers readily available on the market are actually brackish. Such as the Green spotted puffer , the figure 8 puffer, the ceylon puffer, the topaz puffer. There are many species of FW puffer but not many are fit for a community tank as they are either very aggressive or are simply monsters that'd eat pretty much anything that moves in the tank.
