I have an 2231 Eheim canister and was wondering if anyone with an Eheim canister has used non-Eheim filter media to replace the Ehfisubstrat and Ehfimech? I ask because Eheim products cannot be purchased in my city. I was thinking of using some of the Hagen filter media which seems almost identical. Any thoughts on this...

any media that can be cut to size should do(wool etc)
but for bio balls etc anything should do just find an simialr size to what ever you have should work:D

I wasn't really asking about wool or foam, though I did manage to find a circular filter pad replacement manufactured by Hagen that should do the job for the Eheim 2231.
I am wondering if anyone used an alternative to the Ehfisubstrat and Ehfimech that is made for the Eheim canister filters. Ehfisubstrat and Ehfimech are for mechanical and biological filtration. Just want some feedback with alternative media before I purchase the Hagen stuff.

There's no reason why you can't use a different brand of media in an Eheim...the end result is still the same. All you need is a surface in which nitrifying bacteria can grow. You could even use ordinary gravel or lava rock as filter media.

Maybe I'm one of the few that won't pay top dollar for some companies name/logo when it comes to filter floss for canister filters.
I might see paying extra when it's a product like "Phos-Sorb" or similar, special product. As yet, I haven't needed specialty filter media..
A sponge, bio-balls, filter floss, and maybe some peat is all I use..
