im in the process of setting up a 55 gal tank and im wondering what the cheepest way to go with lr would be? i was thinking mostly base rock and then maby some nice stuff from TBS or GULF-VIEW.

kinda tight on money and i need the most cost efficient way of still making it a nice tank, and a benificial part of the aquarium.

p.s. i have been here for a few weeks now and you guys(and gals) are the best! so helpful you are.

sounds like you already got it figured out. Get base rock, such as Tuffa or Lace rock and then put in some live rock that you like to seed it.

Thats be best way to budget it. Gulfview and TBS both have great rock.

Move forward young jedi :)

Actually, given a choice, I'd skip both Tufa and Lace rock and go with some sort of calcium based rock. The beneifits to your water chemistry will be tremendous. http://www.hirocks.com sells the stuff for about the same or less than you can get Tufa or Lace. Those both will work, but if you gotta buy it anyway, go with the best you can.

thanx guys you rock! what kinda ratio would be the best. lr to base rock? oh and when i place the rock in the tank do i just stack it or do i have to bond them together somhow? if there just stack wont they fall down or do you lean it up against the bact of the tank? thanx again guys

good point on the calcium based rock. never seen a source for real calcium based aragonite base rock before, thats good to see.

as for a ratio, I would say 75% base, 25% live would get you a good amount of Live Rock to seed the base rock. As for how to build it up, I just stack it, i've seen people use Plastic Zip Ties, Hydrolic Cement...

I just stack.
