I got 2 cichlids the other day, ones a butterfly cichlid and the other one looks like that one but instead of a golden color its blue, the blue one seems to chase the gold one and the fish looks under distress, would getting more fish solve the problem?

that would depend on the size of your tank... if you had a matched pair you MIGHT be able to keep them in a 10 gal but if they aren't don't plan on getting away with it... a twenty long is a better option as it has room for one to get away from the other
I have found the larger the tank the less agression problems you are going to have...

oh the tank is 20 gallons by the way. After i noticed her was chasing the other one around i placed another cave in there so they could each have there own place, but that didnt seem to work. The poor fish is scared outa his mind. I dunno what to do

get as many caves in there as you can.
another method to curb aggresion in the african cichlids is to overcrowd the tank. You could add maybe five more. That would of course mean a tank upgrade in the not too distant future. Otherwise you are probalby going to have to resign yourself to a single fish tank.
You could try some target fish, maybe a shoal of danios. But expect fatalities.

what about 1 or 2 more fish, i was about to just take it back and try to find a female of the other type since the one i got seems to be a male cuz of the bright colors.

i got 2 more cichlids in the tank, and at first the mean fish chased them all, now the next morning everyone is out and about swimming, even the one that got harassed and would never come out is now out. He still chases 2 of them but the new gold fish looking cichlid he doesnt even bother. I guess i made some progress.

ya more than one besides the aggressor spreads the agression among the remaining fish and one is not singled out that way

couple more days later and they all pretty much get along, even all swim together at times.
