View Full Version : Disposing of saltwater? Consensus?

This might be a dumb question, but I never really thought about it until a few daze ago.

With freshwater, I have always poured it in my yard, might even be good fertilizer, eh?

But...what does everyone do with their saltwater changes? I would think that the salt would damage the yard? Is it possible to have a buildup in the drainpipes if poured down the sink/tub/toilet?

Last Thursday, 4 days ago, I poured 15 gallons in the street at the end of my driveway...noticed today that it is still obvious where it was poured.

One more question...is there enough salt content to prevent my driveway from freezing up this winter? Just curious...

So...what does everyone do with their water after a change?

can't help to much but I can I have heard that putting saltwater on your grass will prevent anything from growing in that spot. but I think it would take a whole lot more than the average 20 to 50 gallons a month one might do.

I just pour it on the lawn, 2.5 gallons a week, in a different spot every week. Things grew fine all summer.

Toilet for me. I'm hoping it will keep roots out of the pipes. The de-icing idea sounds potentially useful.

Mine goes down the kitchen sink. I wonder if that had anything to do with my dispose-all corroding and breaking in half?? :confused:

Down the toilet in the summer, and on the concrete steps and driveway in the winter--it does work as a de-icer.

There are grasses that are salt-tolerant, so it's an option for some. But, many shrubs and trees will not appreciate the salt and high pH, which will accumulate over time in some soils. Out here, it's mostly clay, which will retain the salts and minerals, so I only pour it where I don't want things to grow anyway (ie, under the deck) or where the runoff will go down the drain.
