hey now,
Even with the greatest aquarist taking care of a freshwater tank....doing everything that needs to be done, will their not still be an odor to the water?
thanks,
Jared

Well, I don't think you'd want to use the water as after shave but it also shouldn't be something you smell in the room.
I never have any noticable odour coming from my tanks.

The only time I notice an odor from my tanks is when my nose is about three inches from the water's surface: usually the week before I'm scheduled to clean my filter.

Mine don't smell at all or have the smell of fresh dirt in the springtime. If they smell bad, it can be due to overfeeding, a dead fish (ugh!), cyanobacteria (the so-called blue-green algae). Probably other things can cause it, too but that's what comes to mind.

As stated by others there should not be a noticeable smell. That said a slight odor should not be an argument for not having fish. My dog's breath smells much worse than the water in my fish tank.

There's no odor emanating from my tanks at all. When I'm cleaning or if I stick my nose right up to them, maybe an earthy smell, like when you dig around in a garden, which certaily isn't a bad smell.

I didn't say it was a bad smell, I just said it was a smell. But it is only right before a scheduled filter cleaning, and like I said, I hav to be right at the water level.
