Hey,

Now that I've had some help deciding on the filter brand, I need to know which size to get. I did some reading, and all I managed to find out is that more filtration is better. Well, I already knew that, but how much more will I need?? The tank is a 42 hex, and will have 5 assorted african cichlids in it. The XP2 is rated for up to 70 gallons, but I know cichlids are messy. The budget is getting tight, and we'd really like to decorate this tank too. The fish are important however, so if you say I need an XP3, I guess I'll get an XP3.

One thing I would recommend is.....

Hold off on buying any filstars until the new models come out very soon. I spoke recently to our Rep. because of some serious issues some of our customers have had with the 1st generation filstars.

He told me that they were aware of the main problem from North American wide complaints to their customer service department.

Mainly an air pocket problem in the impeller area that can cause a drastic reduction in filtration. The have corrected the issue with the Generation 2 models. They are asking all major retailers to return all of the generation one models for replacement.

The new model will have a new look box. That will be how you can tell them apart.

As for your question. You can never have enough filtration. Decorations are nice but if the tank is filthy......

Go with the bigger model. You won't be sorry and the fish will be happier. You can always get the decorations later.

I have a Filstar XP3 for a 36x18x12h, about 35g total.

I haven't heard about them serious issues before.

Nevertheless, I'm going to order another XP3 soon for a 90g tank. Hope they don't change the model soon, unless its better at the same price. Last thing I want them to do is to is fancy it up and make it more expensive, like an Eheim.

A new model would be great, but it'll probably be expensive at first, and I really doubt it'll be in stores before christmas. The tank is a christmas present, and I gotta pick out all the "other stuff" before then. The xp3 is rated for 150 some gallons.... is it really necessary? Just gotta check....

The X2 would be fine. For the tank you asked about.

The rep has said that there won't be any significant rise in the price of the Gen 2's. They just want to get it out and increase their sales with some positive feedback.

Good luck.
