I am new to the aquarium thing and recently purchased a 37 gallon tank. I had 2 baby angels in a 5 gallon tank for about 3 weeks and decided it was time to get a bigger tank.. Last weekend after a pitcher of margaritas at a local mexican rest. we stopped by a fish store and picked this little bugger up.. Can't for the life of me remember what it is.. here is a pic

What kind is this and how big will he get?

Here are some other pics of the tank.. tell me what you think..

I put these fish in the tank about 10 days ago the day i got the tank.. i know that was not smart now after reading but i did not know at the time.. they seem to be doing fine.. i put the water conditioner, stress coat, aquaium salt, and some of that bacteria powder in each day for the first 7 days. Temp is at 81 degrees and ph is about 7.1-7.2... Anything else i need to do to keep these fish healthy? Is there enough in the tank?

Thanks guys... Newbie here and i am sure i did alot wrong :(

looks like a young gold severum to me, I'm not really a cichlid expert. You might wanna post this in cichlids. I think they get around 8-10" A much larger tank will be required in the end as well as several more severums as like to be in groups. However, like I said cichlids aren't really my expertise so post it in cichlids for more hard data.

Ahhhh crap... I was hoping this tank would be sufficient for him... The pet store i bought him from said they take fish on a trade if they get to big.. I really didn;t want to go any bigger of a tank but i did see a nice 90 gallon the other day i likes... How long do you think i have before he gets that big?

Just a follow up, the only thing you've done wrong is not cycle the tank. I would keep up major water changes over the next 6 weeks because the levels of ammonia and nitrite are going to spike significantly. pretty much ANY levels of ammonia or nitrite are toxic to south american fish due to the amount of plants and natural filtration the amazon river has. The fish from the amazon aren't really able to cope with any high levels of toxic elements.

Your tank is nice.

The severum will be ok in there. They may grow 8-10 inches, thats in a large enviroment. What do you think is gonna happen, he grows so big that he busts through the glass?

Hes fine in there.

I have tested the ammonia levels every 2 days and they are showing less then .5 ppm every time... The pet store was out of nitrite testers so i am waiting till they get some in.. Did a 5 gallon water change this sat and plan on doing that every sat..used a gravel cleaner... I feed them 3 times a day in small amounts to make sure all the food gets eaten up.. I have some plany bulbs and they are just starting to grow.. I also am changing the my filter out on my Emperor filter system once a week... WHat else can i do to keep those ammonia levels down?

i havent noticed the severum to be real fast growers so you are ok for a while.

i did notice you aren't using the extension on the suction tube for the power filter. i think you'll suck up more crap and get more circulation if you are filtering from the bottom of the tank. you might have to cut a few inches off of it.

That 37 gallon will be a nice sized tank for those angels, you might even get a pair. The severum will be fine in there for a while but you may want to trade him in once he gets larger. Make sure to feed him well and keep the water clean, a stunted fish means you aren't taking good care of it. It's in your best interest to raise a good fish too, since a larger gold severum should trade for a decent price at your LFS. Don't add more severum, because if two of those pair in a 37 all you will have left are the pair of severum. Most cichlids (of which your angelfish and severum both are) can be very violent when they breed.

Another option is to trade the severum back to the fish store after your tank finishes cycling and get some fish that are more compatible with your angelfish. Some possibilities might be a small pleco (ask for recommendations of species that stay under 6"), a small school (5 or so) of corydoras, or a small school of 2-3" rainbowfish. Small tetras are a bad idea since they'll be a nice snack for your angels as they get larger.

Good luck with your severum! Sadly I had a feeding accident and lost one of mine over the weekend. Be sure to keep up your water quality.
