What is this? Saw it in a tank somewhere ages ago and never found out what it was...

Those would be one of the taller anubias varieties, I suppose. Can't see the leaves, so it's kinda hard to identify which one. Probably outgrew his tank.. and he cut off the tops.

Ya its impossible to tell without seeing a leaf.
Rhizome and all looks to be some type of anubias though.

Cheers. It's all that could be seen actually, I'm not that daft like! It was in a zoo, and the tank was 'in-wall' so couldn't see above the tank. Looks cool though eh? How long would it take to grow this big? I like the tree trunk effect the stems give

It would probably take years with a small cutting to get that large. Really depends on how big of a piece you start with.

Agreed, it would probably take a while. Need lots of light, CO2, and maybe even steroids. ;)

Could be anything. Personally I think they're reeds or rushes of some kind.

If you look closely in the second pic you can see leaves whick look like one of the narrow leaf species of anubias.
Also in the first pic near the bottom.

Are you sure that is from the same plant?? Looks like crypt leaves.

After looking at it closer, in the second pic, those look like crypts. First pic still looks like a small offshoot of the rhizome.

i think the plants would grow faster being as their leaves are (i think) on the surface, so they get more light and have access to all the co2 they need. i also read that for most of the plants we grow in our aquariums, the ones that can grow emersed rather than submersed will grow much faster if they are allowed to grow somewhat out of the water.
