Gday all,
Iam setting up a 55g mbuna tank and need some advice on filter selection.

As it happens i have 3 filters ( Eheim 2213, Eheim wet/dry 2227 and a Fluval 304).
I was going to keep two (one for bio and one for mech filtration) and sell the other.

I believe the eheim 2227 is the cream of the crop in terms of bio filters but would it be entirely necessary for my needs. I would be able to sell this filter for atleast $250AUD which i could then put toward something else.

What two filters would you recommend i keep and use and which one should i sell? The tank is at the head of my bed too so choosing the quietest filters is a consideration also.

Keeping in mind that i will only change the water once every 3 weeks or so as my tank is kept in an attic and water changes are a massive p.i.t.a!

Also is activated carbon really all that useful necessary?

Looking to keep a mixed Lab, cyno, pseudo and metria tank.

Any advice would be appreciated :)

Regards
Max

I would keep the two eheim's but on the other hand the fluval 304 is very quiet so my second recommendation would be the eheim 2227 and the fluval 304..

As for charcoal yes it is important it is used to remove tannins and waste from your water like urine and any trace elements like chemicals and the like..

I would use the charcoal only if you want to remove unsightly tannins, as Pitbull suggested or after you're done with the medication cycle, otherwise it'll be fine if you choose not to use it, I stopped using charcoal altogether a long time ago and the water params and clarity are as they should be.

Invest some of the $$ from the sale of the spare filter in a python (or Lee's, may be less expensive) and plan on doing more frequent water changes. I've seen the Lee's listed as a 25' with a 50' extension hose available. That would save you the hassle of carrying buckets of water up and down the stairs...

Charcoal helps with urine, feces and medications but if you did weekly water changes with a Python no spill n fill kit you would be fine unless you were wanting to remove some type of medication with out doing a massive water change..
