Is the heater in the main tank? Do you see the fish hiding by the heater? That looks very much like a burn mark, often happens when the fish hide under a heater. The fish will usually recover, but you might want to pick up a heater gaurd, and add some hiding places that are safer.

yeah he sits by the heater a lot, i got cichlids another cat and pleco, i called him a pictus because he looks like the spotted pictus i got but has stripes instead of spots, hes in a 20 g.

what kind of pleco is this?

how many fish in this 20 gal tank?
in the petstore when i got him 6 years ago was called a 4-lined cat, he has the same body style and whiskers as the pictus cat. The pleco is just a common pleco, there in a 20g tank, but will soon move into a 55g.

it looks sort of like a pictus because it is sort of like a pictus, they're both the same species or genus or whatever. it *is* a pimelodus (sp?) of which "pictus" is a member, ie: pimelodus pictus. personally i sort of think that's a "3-line pim" not a 4.... but in any case.....

pimelodus pictus:

pimelodus blochii: (which is either the closest thing to, or is a 4 line pim)

or you can try searching around:

in the cat-e-log under "Pimelodidae" and you might find the one i mean by "3 line pim". i didn't really notice it in there tho, so maybe a websearch for it. i used to have a 4 line or "blochii" and the stripes weren't nearly as pronounced or defined as yours are. that's the biggest difference i know of between the 2 of them tho.

good luck

ah, btw, sorry, no real advice for the mark other than watch it to make sure it isn't parasitic and maybe try some "melafix" for awhile.

i'm guessing he doesn't have many places to hide, because if he had a cave he wouldn't be out in the open. you can pick up some pvc pieces fairly cheap and he would probably happily move in, and that would keep him away from the heater, in case that's what's causing it. the only time mine really came out was when i put food in the tank, they are fairly shy by nature.

dangerdoll: my favorite mystus:

i actually just bought 2 of them about a month ago. :)

i got two caves in there, my spotted pictus is always out and swimming around, the 4-lined is always laying at the bottom
