View Full Version : Need a new pump

My current pump that I use in my sump is a Rio 4600. I've had it almost two years and have replaced the impellar once. This thing is so loud that it's ridiculous. I believe its because it can't handle the straight up head of about 8 feet that the water needs to travel to get back in my aquarium (225 gal.) If I run it in a bucket with no back pressure on it, it's silent.
I've been looking at Home Depot and Lowes for pumps, the larger ones seem about the right size but aren't useful for saltwater. Does anyone have any experience and reccomendations for a pump that can handle a 225 with 8' head and is relatively quiet? I know it's a lot to ask of a pump, but I need to ditch this Rio for a more reliable and better pump.
Thanks :)

Reefs.org has an excellent article comparing different pumps. Since you know your head and how many gph you need, you should be able to find a few pumps that will meet your needs.

Thanks a lot, I'll probably ask about anyone with experience with certian brands once I pick a few. I want to be sure I get a fairly quiet one.

Avoid Rio like a PLAGUE.. Too many people have wiped out entire tanks with those things.. Too risky, IMHO..

Yes, I've heard about them leaking oil. Another reason I need to upgrade before my cycle ends.

Does anyone else use pumps that could recommend a certian name brand that is reliable?

I've been using Danner mag drives for years. Cheap, reliable, relatively quiet, but have a slight tendency to leak when used as external pumps. Adequate, but there are better pumps on the market.

Thanks Mog. how much of a turnover can I realistically get and what should I be looking for? I'm not having much luck finding pumps that get much more than 1000-1200 gph at about 8' head. Is this enough turnover for a 225?

Actually I see Danner Supreme Mag-Drive pumps on Ebay that can do 3600 at 1' head. You say these leak? What do they leak, it looks submersible?

Anyone familiar with Laguna pumps?
I found a WG 7000 that does about 2100gph. But I'd like to know about noise and pressure ratings.

Thanks

For an external pump, you cant beat the "sequence" pumps. They are pricey though. Remember when you are using a submersible pump like mag drives, you are puting a heater in your tank as they get pretty warm.

DO NOT BUY RIO!!! These pumps are junk, with a capital "J". I bought one to use with a skimmer and the piece of junk lasted less than a year. I kept it clean and it still burned up right in my tank. Try Maxi-Jet

Unfortunately, I have a Rio. I'm looking to replace it which is better than having it crap out on me.
I have a 225 gallon aquarium FO, if the pump helps with heating then I'm okay with that. I haven't had any issues with the Rio running my tank warm, but it's a Rio.
I think I'd like to find submersible if I can.

It didn't keep my water warm, it BURNED up, with smoke. These pumps are not worth the money. I have bought 2 and both fizzled within a year. Save your money and buy something else other than Rio.

What do they leak, it looks submersible? Sorry for taking so long, I was out of town. They can be used either inline or submerged. If used inline, they can leak water. There are very few benefits of salt creep, but one of them is that the leaks around the O-ring tend to clog with salt and stop within a few days.

No problem, I haven't been here in a couple days anyway.
Thanks for the advice, I need to get something very soon.
