View Full Version : Baby Java Ferns
When is the correct time to seperate a baby java fern from the mother plant? Or do I leave it to seperate on it's own.
I've got about 5 or 6 java ferns and they all seem to have started growing babies on their leaves over the last several weeks.
I assume they'll eventually break off and float off- should I just wait until that happens?

I'd wait until they're a couple of inches, then you can pluck them and reattach them where you like. My ferns have turned into little plant-making factories.

indeed. the longer you wait, the faster they seem to develop.

Need not worry, you can detach when you see some roots. If the plant is big enough you will have lots soon.
OK thank you... I'm in no hurry to rehome them.
I'll wait until they're bigger... I was slightly worried they'd be taking nutrients from the mother plant... but I guess they grow their own roots so they'll be helping out too until they're big enough... and there are no aquarists in the wild to pluck the babies off!

i wouldnt worry about them taking nutrients
thier roots in general dont really absorb nutrients
at the same time ive had good luck plucking java fern as small as one inch
