i have recently put my male betta in my 29 gallon tank he did fine and his colors even got better but sometimes, like twice a day he will swim up against the back of the aquarium and open his gills REALLY wide. so wide that i can even see in his gills , why is he doing this?

He's seeing his reflection and he thinks that it is another betta. It is perfectly normal, both my male bettas do this.

The gill flaring is your betta's attempt at looking larger and imposing. Kind of like when a cat fluffs out its fur and hisses. He will also do this if you hold up a mirror to the tank.
