Marimo ball

I saw a thread back in June on these Marimo balls. I thought they looked and sounded interesting. The lfs had a few in so I bought 1. It is all green with no brown spots like a few of them had.
My problem, or really my question is this. The ball has a tear in it, almost half way through. Should I rip it completely in half, and will I then have 2 balls, ....... in my aquarium. Or should I place a rubber band around it, and will it grow back together?
Just looking for input form others who have had experience with these.

Well, I know folks who have sliced theirs and had the divisions eventually round up. Mine are still intack and I have not done anything to them.

if the ball is 3" or bigger, then just rip it in two, if it's smaller, just tie it up with some cotton and wait for it to heal.
