Right now I feed flakes, frozen, and I have some pellets. I also feed baby brine shrimp from time to time.

In books, I read about buying fresh fish at the grocery store, chopping it up and feeding it.

1) What kind of fish?

2) It seems like the pieces would have to be pretty small. Do you just throw little pieces of raw fish from the meat counter in there?

3) Any other suggestions for economical (but healthy) foods? (I'm on a budget)

Thanks!

What fish are you feeding? Some fish, like tangs, should not be given a high protien diet, and the prepared foods that include spirulina and nori are better options.

If you are feeding omnivores an predators, chopped seafood is a good option. For the trigger, lion and eel, we get a raw 'gumbo' misture that has white fish, raw shrimp, squid, mussels and scallops. We chop it up into small chunks, between 1/4 and 3/4 an inch, and refreeze it. Then we thaw out a few chunks at time for feeding. The fish love it, and since it's mostly large bits, almost all of it gets eaten by the fish, and the remaining small bits are short work for the detrivores.

A few books (like, I think Tullock's Natural Reef Aquariums) have blender recipes. They usually involve clams, mussels, whole shrimp, nori, with gelatin as a binder. Looks worth it for a big tank. I can hunt around if you're interested.
