If I want infusoria to feed to baby fish do I need a culture or do I just let lettuce and hay and grass or whatever in a pitcher of water? Thanks. Also how long does it take?

I read in the magazine Aquarium USA on how to make infusoria. I don't exactly remember right now, but I do know that you let a piece of lettuce in a jar of water. The green stuff of the edges is the infusoria. I THINK you leave it there for about 3-7 days. Hope this helps!
