I barely noticed it after I finished giving my dog Honey a bath earlier today. We bought a medication called Maracyn Two by Mardel. Does it work? And should I add an extra treatment of salt? if so, how much? By the way, thank you in advance for helping. I might have the pictures by tomorrow if the developing takes place in time. :D

I don't know sorry :( it's 2am on the east coast you'll probably have to wait until tomorrow for advice...

I would atleast venture to say that you'll need to wait atleast 48 hours before you dose again or with something else though...

My parents have a dog named Honey... smartest German Sheperd in the world :D

i'm not sure what marycide 2 treats, but read the directions and see if it treats gram positive or gram negative bacterial infections. also see if it can be combined with any other meds. to succesfully treat the fish you will probably want to treat both. from the same company, maracyn and maracyn2 ...... one treats positive and one treats negative and they can be combined. i used marycin 2 succesfully to treat popeye on my new little oscar (i bought it sick).

"popeye" is definately bacterial.......

i'm not sure i would bother with salt in this case. it is an internal problem that's causing it. i like to use a little in my aquariums now and then tho.

ah..... another option, one that sort of reminds me of the holy grail, is the legendary medicated food. i have heard lots of rumors of this, but have yet to see it. if you can find it and get it in a reasonable time frame it would be a much better option. anything given internally would be alot better than just saturating the water.

I'm sorry I meant Maracyn 2. The directions say that it treats popeye. I talked to a guy at PetSmart (not your average everyday fish dummy ;) ) and he said that it would be better than Maracyn 1 because in Maracyn 2, the fish's skin (scales) directly absorbs the medication. Today's the second day of treatment and the popeye has disinflated a little. Is that a good sign? (sorry for my ignorance, it's because I had'nt ever read or even heard about popeye until now. )

Yea, my friend's Angel had popeye and used that. It helped a bit but the fish eventually keeled. It got a lot worse before it got better, and it only affected one eye. I'd make sure you don't have any loaches in with a medicated tank.

if it's going down it should be healing. :)

like with people tho, make sure you do the recommended treatment length, and when in doubt do it twice if the meds say it's ok.

good luck

well... i've never heard of it staying forever. Maybe what your fish has is something else? Try consulting your local exotic animal hospital... we have one here in San Diego. :D

Your doing just what you should. I've used the Maracyn 2 with great results. You have to be on top of it though. 24 hours means 24, not 23 or 25. Make sure to do the water changes and remove the carbon from your filters. Only add as much salt as needed. Remember, salt doesn't leave the tank unless you take it out, i.e. water changes. Only have about 1 tbsp. per 5 gallons max. I like to keep it around 1 tbsp. per 10 myself. Maybe up it during times like these and then don't add after the next water change. Good luck!!

IME, popeye is best cured with large water changes for several days, then subsequently keeping up with good tank husbandry & making sure your tank is not overstocked & the fish not overfed.

Well guys, thanks for the advice! My Tiger Barb (1 of the leaders) is well again. Another reason I know is because he started fighting w/ the other again... oh well... Thanks anyway!
