Water Sprite...floating plant?

I have a Water Sprite and after relentless nibbling the bottom died. The top part however seems to be doing fine and has long roots coming from just above the dead part. Finally, the weak stem broke from the gravel and is now floating around in my tank (on the surface), and has been for the last few days.

I was thinking about just letting is float because it seems to be doing fine and looks healthy. Two branches remain in the gravel and are also doing well.

If I snipped the dead part off and let it float, do you think it will keep growing?

Thanks.
