Would these make good dither fish in a group for juvenile central american cichlids?

Guess it depends on what species of fish... the big nasties won't allow barbs to live for very long (even as juvies). Cryptoheros/archocentrus genus fish would work well with tiger barbs... nicaraguense would as well... amphilophous genus fish (red devil, midas, trimac, etc) would make short work of tiger barbs.

I have tiger barbs in with a large female Midas and they do just fine. The Midas even bred with a male texas cichlid and they didn't bother the tiger barbs during the process.

I also have them with medium oscars, convicts, jack dempsy, and others. None of the cichlids are fast enough to bother with them. Once the oscars get a little bigger I will move them to a tank without tiger barbs.

If you feed your cichlids live food then they may not do as well with tiger barbs.

They should be fine. I keep 4 tiger barbs in a 55 with two firemouths and they are spawning now and dont bother them at all.

I just love Firemouths!! Beautiful and great parents. I've got a few very small ones now. First time I've had them since about 1987.
