My convicts finally have had babies! :D

There's about 20 that I can see (They are on the underside of a piece of drift wood), and many more eggs yet unhatched.

I do have a question however, how can I tell who is the father? Is it the questionable one (looks like a female but acts like a male), or is the big guy that's definately a male... I don't think the big guy could fit under the driftwood... could he have still fertilized them?

Also, about how long will it take them to get to a sellable size (that's about an inch, right?), with weekly 25% water changes and being feed Sera Micron?

Thanks for any help..

and how long will the yolk last on them before I have to start feeding them?

I would think the big one would be the male.

Someone else who has raised convicts should be able to answer the other questions. You might also want to do some searching around on yahoo or google to find the answers to that. There are guides out there devoted to raising convict kiddies. :)

Congratulations, you are a grandparent.:D The father will be the one that is just plain grey and striped, the momma will have some orange coloration on her belly.

look for the 2 that are guarding them. they should be pretty distinct. the larger of the 2 will be the male more than likely. female has orange along the belly usually, and the male has dorsal and anal fins that go past the caudal fin. (in english, the top and bottom fins will be longer than the tail.)

also, if the male is "dominant" he should have a bump on his forehead. (nuchal (sp?) hump) but all males will breed, just the dominant one in the tank will have this.

one of them had to be able to fertilize them if they're hatching. viable eggs are like a waxy yellow, bad ones are white. the dad will be one of the 2 guarding them.........

it takes awhile for them to get any size. i would say *at least* a month, but i never really bothered to time it. i actually think closer to 2..... this is for an average size, you will have a couple larger and a few smaller.....

I have blacks... All 3 are gaurding the fry to  . The known male had a nachal hump when we bought him as well.

If viable eggs are a waxy yellow... then I have a male con with orange on his belly. They laid eggs once before we bought the other male and they were yellow. I guess they probably ate the eggs their first 3 spawns, as this is their 4th.

Also, where the cons laid their eggs, there is no way that the larger male could have fit under the drift wood to fertilize them.

I'm so confused , lol.
