Well i converted to a DSP from Crushed Coral by mixing in some of the aragonite and crushed coral gravel that was already in there with sterilized playsand, and then used a fishing net to remove the gravel from the sand (and also to help aerate it) after 3 weeks. When i took the gravel out there was a small ammount of nitrite which then disapeard the next day. I plan on eventually dropping the biowheel (also not using a skimmer), but i dont think there is enough bacteria in the DSB to remove the ammonia and nitrites if the wheel was removed. Also using 10lbs of lace rock in a 15gl aquarium.

I wouldn't remove the biowheel until you have more live rock. The sand hosts aerobic bacteria in the upper levels, but it's primarily for the anaerobic bacteria--live rock will host aerobics much better.
