Which scenario consumes more energy:
one 300w heater or
two 300w heaters
I assume that two would work half as hard each, thus consuming the same as if only one were in the tank. Is this a correct assumption?

Six in one hand, half a dozen in the other! I’m going to use two heaters in my new 75. My only concern is getting them balanced. It would seem that if “Heater 1” was adjusted a tad higher/lower than “Heater 2”, “Heater 2” would never come on. But to answer your question, the difference is negotiable. I would say that other than the initial cost, two heaters would be more efficient. (If they are balanced)

Just my humble opinion. ..................

I agree, and there's extra security in the fact that "just in case" one heater blows, at least you've got one in there for backup.

Two heaters will consume a little more electricity, but they will keep the water temerature more even and offer redundancy.
