I have to move and I want to take my 29g planted tank with me. I've never moved a tank before but I figure they ship fish, right? So how do I do it. Do the fish go into bags? Or my 5g bucket? What about temp change? I'm in Ohio and it's winter time. Do the plants stay in the tank with a little water? Do I tank any of the water with me? Hopefully, the whole trip will take only 5 hours.

Thanks, Ray
p.s. I also have a 10g nano sw with lr/ls, some xenia, a trumpet coral, rock flower anemoni, astrea and nasarius snails, and a banded coral shrimp if anyone has experience with sw moves.

What kind of vehicle are you moving them in? If the fish will be in a car, they'll be ok as long as it's heated (and you're in Ohio, so it should be).

Well, I just moved into our new house on Sat and had to go move 5 fish tanks last night in a hurry!! Got one more to go, but it's only a 12 gallon, so no big deal. I live in Colorado and it's pretty darn cold right now and was last night and it looks like I only lost one Blue Ram. The tanks were a 55, 40 breeder, 20 reg, 20 long, and a 10 gal.
My suggestion on the 29 gal is to drain it down so there is about 3" of water left in it and move it that way. The 29 gal is not real big and 2 people should be able to move it with that much water no problem. I did that on my 40 gallon yesterday, but I would not recommend doing it in a tank that big as it was still really heavy and we had to go up/down stairs. All the other tanks were drained completely and fish put into buckets and moved that way. Keep the heater cranked in the car and you should be fine. By leaving the fish in the tank, it will not stress them as much as being put in a bucket or such. I also stretched a glad bag over the top of the tank and securely taped it al around the top so to keep slooshing water from splashing out, but the water pretty much stayed put.
Good luck on your move.

Taking a uhaul and one other vehicle - either a pickup or an accord - both heated. Shaould i put a blanket around tank or any other insulating type thing?
