Ive just about had enough!!! Ive bought 3 Tetra Whisper Submersable heaters (the30-60 one 200 watts) for my 55 gallon and i cannont get the stupid thing to work correctly!!! Ive followed the directions to the tee and all it will do is bring my temperature up to about 74 then it shuts off no matter how high i crank it up. They say that in the middle position it will heat a 60 gallon tank to 78 degrees...If i turn it up all the way it will turn on for like 2-3 mins then shut right back off again without doing anything to the temerature...im at wits end!! Someone, please recomend me a better submersable heater or tell me what im doing wrong!!

Did you give them some time to 'cycle'?

From what I've seen, heaters are not instant on, and instant off... There's a delay....

Yes, it says to leave it on the center position for 24 hours to allow it to stabilize...then slowly increase the temp every 4-6 hours in small increments till you get to your desired temp...ive done this SEVERAL times and its all the way up now and im still sitting at 74 with no heater on!

Return it for a refund, or exchange. In my experience, an aquarium heater is a critical piece of equipment that you don't want to be screwing around with. If you crank it even more to raise the temperature beyond 74 degrees, it may decide to work properly sometime in the future, thereby cooking every fish in your tank.

I use Hagen's Tronic or Ebo-Jagers. These heaters are probably the best on the market for my money. I have also used Marineland's heater with great success. I avoid the hang on the back heaters, and well as low-grade and middle of the road budget heaters. I only get top rated quality heaters.

Yeah, I've got a 50W Tetra heater that's about the same... not getting any more of those. ;P

Now I've got a Tronic and some Visi-Therms and no complaints so far. I've heard good things about Ebo-Jagers, but I've never had one.

Agree 110%. I have both and they are great. So easy to use and again, the two best heaters on the market.
