is a sponge on the intake of a power filter like a sponge filter? i have a sponge that is bigger than the intake, is water going through the whole sponge?
It acts as a prefilter to protect the impeller, and also a sponge filter which will do two things....provide a place for good bacteria and help to keep your water clean. It's also a good way to keep the smaller fish from getting into your filter.

On many of my canister filters, I drilled holes in the last 3" of the intake tube, so that when the sponge slides over the tube, water is drawn thru the sponge over it's entire length, not just at the bottom.
