I think I finally got my ammonia under control. My nitrIte is still a touch above 1.0 but hopefully that is on the way down. This is after doing no water changes today! My next obstacle appears to be what i assume is brown algae forming on the sides of the 8 gal biocube and the live rock! The filter is also very brown and i am two weeks into this. I have 3 snails and 3 hermits that aren't keeping up. Any advice?? Filter change??

Sounds like diatoms and is part of setting up a new tank. Just wait it out, it will eventually go away. When your nitrites reach 0 and you start seeing you nitrates go up, do a water change and your ready to start stocking.

Now I seem to have a green algae on the glass that seems to be nearly impossible to rub off with my fingers. What is the best remedy for removing this? My snails are to busy on the rock and elswhere to fix this. I only feed every three days and the lights are on for 7 hours a day!

An old credit card is quite handy for cleaning the glass.

What is in the tank that you are feeding every three days? Being such a small water volume and considering that the tank is still cyling, I hope it's not a fish.

Eehhh, you'll learn to live with that green algae. Mine is green-brown and always gets in the corner where I have to get it out with a rigid-bristle toothbrush. I'd try that before anything.

I also have an 8 gallon Biocube, just make sure you really cycle it, thats where I messed up. Good luck and keep us posted!

p.s., never try an anemone. ;)
