At what rate do these fish grow. I have a 29 gallon tank and was wondering how long i could keep a pair of one these(maybe eve just a single oscar or jack dempsy) until i had to get larger tank. There would also be a catfish? I cant really find any copmatible fish. Does anybody else have these fish with other fish or critter in the tank with them. I guess i was wondering if they would eat a crab or crayfish?

the jack dempsey will stay smaller but is a lot meaner, you have have it for a while in a 29. you cant fit a pair of either, the oscars will outgorw it too fast and the jacks will kill each other. you can put crayfish but it might attack the fish at night and when the crayfish molts he will probably get eaten. you can have a single full size jack in a 40 for life. oscars would need a 60 atleast and a 90 for a pair. how about getting a small jack dempsey and a striped raphel cat, they are havily armored.

what fish would be good to cycle the tank.

you can get the jack dempsey if thats what you are getting, get a smaller one and do tests and water changes regularly until tank is cycled, dont feed to much and he should be fine they are pretty tough.

Stay away from the oscars if you plan on sticking with the 29. They grow pretty fast. In less than a year, my oscar is almost 9". I had 2 in a 55 gallon for a while and it was ridiculously over crowded (both were 12+ inches long). Of course you could trade them back to a LFS if you REALLY want to raise an oscar for a short time......but I would stick with the smaller J.D.
