I always see the rule of thumb about things like amount of lighting during the day and how DIY co2 doesn't work on tanks over 20 gal.

This tank is 30 gal with DIY co2 at the moment. It gets 6 hrs of light mon through fri , 8 and a half hrs on sat , and 13 hrs on sun.
There are over 50 fish .

RB says it's time for a trim and :iagree:with that .

What gives

"Rules of thumb" are as varied and mythical as the number of stars in the universe...

None of them apply to every tank and set of conditions.

Thumbs come in many shapes and sizes.

It's kind of like the rules about stocking too.I have never understood them myself.I'll have to post pics with the stock list of my planted 20 & 30 gallons sometime.
Great looking tank!!

To be fair, DIY CO2 can be done on any size tank, but the larger the tank the more work it gets to be. I've always assumed people meant that the amount of work involved with larger tanks just wasn't really worth it.

i should probably use co2 on this tank. but i'm afraid i'd never see my fish again.

Beautiful tank!

I love those cardinals too! Would you mind sharing your diy co2 recipe/set-up?

I use the standard method but I use regular tap water . Add some warm water to the soda bottle, add 3 cups sugar , shake, add 1 teaspoon baking soda, shake, add one half teaspoon of Red Star active dry yeast , the stuff in the jar, ( keep it refrigerated), add warm water to the top of where the top of the bottle label would be, shake gently flipping the bottle upside down and back and forth. Hook back up to system.

I use 3 bottles and just check them with a flashlight to make sure they are producing enough. Once they slow down I just recharge them. With 3 bottles I just alternate so there is always enough production.

I am waiting for my co2 splitter so I can connect this tank to my pressurized cylinder.
