just a quick question, i am building a canopy for my 75 gallon, and wanted to know if i could use and florecent lighting fixtures? like could i just get a cheap on from home depot or lowes? thanx guys
 
Aquarium Hobbyist has some great retrofit compact fluorescent fixtures. Normal output fluorescent, like you find at Home Depot, will be fine for fish, but inadequate for photosynthetic invertebrates like corals and clams.
 
I bought a shop light 48" with the double strip for $7 at Lowes. it would have cost $100 at my lfs! with the plug as well. Looks remarkably well for a shop light even though I do have a canopy over it.
