Just curious if it's really necessary to quarantine your fish for 3-4 weeks before putting them in your tank - i'm thinking a week shoul be ok - i mean you can tell by then if your fish has some ick or fungus or something - i guess internalprobs woul be the exception but even after q-ing them it might nto show up for a while -
i believe in q-ing fish i think it saves a lot of troubles but have mix feelings on the amount of time whatcha think?

Hm... I can never answer a poll - I always get that i have an "invalid session"...odd

Technically, you should quarantine for at least 3 weeks (and many people even say that the period should extend to 45-90 days - which I dont' have th patience for). Ich does not always show up righ taway and can be on the fish for many weeks without showing up. Same goes for fungus/bacteria. Also, internal parasites might not show up for awhile.

If you're gonna qtine, you might as well do it right.

i agree with you i'm just such an impatient guy lol - i have a 3 gal q tank set up for new fish - but i mean is this big enough to keep them in for a month or so? how many coul i comfortably Q -
i was using a 20 gal as a q tank but i am learning this is a bad idea it's too much water to treat - the tank has now become a disease pit - i have been battling a combo of ick - mouth fungus for like 3 comes back n i have to stop fungus treatment - obviosuly not helping is the fact that you have to raise temps to fight ick but this makes the fungus grow quicker im so frustrated ive considered flushing everything, sterilizing the tank n starting it over - in the meantime i have set up a new small q tank
can i use melafix for the mouth fungus while treating cik with kordon ick away ?:shake: its a mess

Well, i think a three is kind of small. A ten is a good sized tank as long as you don't have any big fish (obviously). As to how many you can fit, it depends on the kind of fish.

That does stikn about the combo of diseases though.

Just a note: melafix will not cure mouth fungus at all. It is NOwhere near strong enough. Look into binox (very strong, doesn't cost a lot and you only use a little) or Jungle fungus eiliminator.

I've used those both in combination with coppersafe (I had the same combo as you) and no ill effects came of it. Though, generally, it is a very abd thing to go mixing meds. But, its not like yuo can let either of the diseases run rampant while the other is treated.

perhaps you can keep the temperature down a bit, and just treat longer with meds. Fungus will grow very fast if allowed to and will quickly rot away the fish's mouth.

Wish I could help more but I'm in a bit of a hurry...
Ps. Don't flush 'em.;)

it's tough because the two require different treatments -
i tried jungle fungus eliminator for a little while and i did nothing but melafix seemed to start to work - but then the stupid ick reappeared thus stopping fungus treatments -
this time i am going to try to COMPLETLY kill the ick as in the past i may have hurried the treatment to get back to the fungus - the mouth fungus has been very slow growing maybe because i have been able to keep in check somewhat with treatments in between ick outbreaks - i'm going to irradicate this little ick b*stards though this time i'm getting very aggrevated then i will fight the fungus once all is clear i will Q the entire tank for at least 3 mos - ughhhhhhhhh what a nightmare if i didnt q those fish my 55 woul be ruined!
you know what? maybe it's not even safe to ever put those fish in my big tank?
or is it once their ok?

Theyll be fine to go in eventually.

Be careful with the mouth fungus. It often looks like it is gone, so you stop medicating, then it comes back because it hadn't left to begin with.

FYI, I'ev got a boesmani whose been getting treated for mouth fungus in a qtank for 2.5 months-ish.;) Patience, grasshoppa.
