My sister has a female and a male betta. She asked for my help in breeding them. The male betta has built a nest but i don't know how big they are meant to be. I asked her if i could put the female in and see if they did anything. The male betta started rubbing up against the female but the female swam away. It seemed that the male betta got frustrated and wanted to attack her says my sister. He was flaring his gills at her. My sister screamed at me to fish the female out. Its not my fish so i can't leave them in there to see what happens. Any suggetions??

If you have no other fish in the tank besides the two bettas, I would suggest giving the feamle plenty of places to hide or even getting a few more females.

In general, if the male is ready to mate he will keep on harrassing the female until she succumbs. If the female does not appreciate his advances, she will be worn out and may die.

It sounds as though you haven't researched quite enough.

Here's a site with some information:
http://articles.gpasi.org/betta_splendens.html

Googling for somemore info might help too.

Beginners shouldn't try breeding them in anything less then a 10g, IMO. More experienced breeders can successfully breed bettas in a 5g. So, a 2g is too small; there is very little hiding space for the female.

I made a betta site once. has breeding info on it. not super detailed, however, i don't have pics with it. But you can check it out.

I haven't updated in over a year. :p

check this site out too. I believe it includes some info about the color combinations and what not too. If nothing else, some great pics/fish

PS. If it is a succesful spawn, what do you plan on doing with the potential *hundreds* of fry that will result? Do you have somewhere to raise them/keep them/sell them once they're old enough?

yeah in order to breed bettas you have to have a larger tank to put the fry into that they can grow into comfortably. If you're serious about doing this you need to be set up for it before you start breeding.

So thats whats going on in my tank. My new Royal Blue Male was "fighting" with one of the females.

He has his own house at the top in the floating plants and when she went in it appeared they were kicking the crap out of each other. He chases her all over the tank as well....but then she will turn on him and chase him over....she chased him into the "tree" in the middle of the tank. That stopped him for 5 minutes.

Are they planning on getting it on - or do they dislike each other and the fighting will get worse...?

Sorry for the hijack.

Regards
Claire

ukclaire, Watch them carefully. If it gets really bad seperate them. They might loose thier fins if it gets really violent, and eventually one will get killed.

-------

on another note;
i don't like the idea of breeding bettas that you commonly find in pet stores. they are bad strains and mixed colors/types.
If you want to be serious about breeding, aquire bettas from breeders and at auctions, where you are more sure of getting a good strain. It matters if you want to aviod sterile and hybrid bettas.
