View Full Version : "Fuzz" on Crowntail's Fins-Fungus?

Today I noticed 2 small fuzzy patches on two of the tips of my Crowntail Bettas anal fin (at the very end). Now this betta has a habit of "trimming" his own tail in the back, but not any others.

It's not white but kind of grey looking. What should I do? Any products specifically for bettas?

The fact that he "trims" his fins suggests that there is something irritating them. If its fuzzy I would expect it to be a fungus.

Haven't used bettamax...I usually use some salt, melafix and a fungus eliminator by Jungle (either the Guard, Eliminator, or Binox)

You don't need a product specifically aimed at bettas. Anything for that purpose will work.

What size tank is he in?

PS. followed the link here and accidentally posted on this one. Two posts get very confusing.

He's in a 6 gallon eclipse tank.

Note: I also cross-referenced this post in the General Freshwater Forum. Sorry, I didn't know if I'd get alot of responses in this forum.

I did get some bettamax from the LFS and am currently using it. It says it's for torn fins and fungus and says it's specially developed for bettas. However, it sure makes a mess going in....... Looks like a sulfur film, and takes a bit of churning to get it to mix into the water.

We'll see.

Again, sorry for the double post :emb:

since OG locked me out of the other...... :D

something to keep in mind, some "fungus" is bacterial in nature. so if you don't see an improvement, or you notice a deterioration, you might want to try that route.

good luck

Thanks Ewok, I am getting a little worried because this morning I also noticed a spot of the same "fuzz" on the tip on one of the "crowns" of his tail. It's moving fast....

The Bettamax says that it also treats bacterial infections and is a 5 day treatment dosing every other day and then repeating 3 weeks later.

One of two things might have happened. A couple of weeks ago I put some ghost shrimp in with him. Some of them died (I removed them as soon as I noticed they were dead), and the rest I moved to another tank. Maybe they carried some kind of bacteria. I might also add that they are all dead now. I should have quarantined the shrimp before adding them to my tanks, but I guess I didn't think :argh

Also, the temp in the tank has been fluctuating. I don't know if it's a heater problem, or an outside temp problem. It's been cold here lately we have been keeping the thermostat turned down at night. Just to add: there is a 50w heater in this tank (6 gallon). I'm leaning toward a heater problem.
