I'm going to build DIY remora as a non-HOB version.

Can somebody give me the dimensions of the actual remora? I just want a good idea of how big it is. Maybe I can make them and sell them online for cheaper. :) Wouldn't it be nice to have a remora for 50 bucks? :)

That model would be called the Urchin. The Aqua C (http://www.proteinskimmer.com) web site gives the specs on the unit.

How do you plan on creating the patented spray injection???

This has already been done on a different forum..

Looks easy enough. :) The concept is simple.. Probably inspired by a man peeing into a toilet and getting foam. :) They just call it "patented spray injection" Whatever, its a hose spraying into the water.

Wouldn't it be nice to have a remora for 50 bucks? I realized at some point that I only DIY if it entertains me. My time is worth a lot more than the price of a skimmer. Especially when the "Mark I" has a serious flaw that I only discover at the end. So have fun and let us know how it works.

I will do. Hopefully I will have good results - I will post my progress in a thread marked "DIY Remora" or something like that.

be careful you do not copy their injector, there design is patented. Even if you copy it for personal use, its still against the law.

Naww - just because it is patented doesn't mean you can't reproduce it. Just means you can't sell it. Thats what patent law is for. The sale of product. Not the existance of items.

And theirs is a figure-8 shape.. if mine was simply a hole drilled in pipe, they couldn't say that was patented. Besides - I was only half-way serious about selling them.

Your wrong there, from the US patent website

"patent- a property right granted by the Government of the United States of America to an inventor “to exclude others from making, using, offering for sale, or selling the invention throughout the United States or importing the invention into the United States” for a limited time in exchange for public disclosure of the invention when the patent is granted."

It is illegal to make or use a product that has a patent. It has harsher penalties for selling.

I admit I was wrong then.. I could have SWORN that the patent laws were different.. Oh well. Not going to stop me. :)

I won't sell them, however, but atleast I can benefit. Who the HELL wants to pay the dough THEY want. Its VERY unfair in my opinion.

It will actually be an Urchin - because it will be in-sump. Same design though.. How do the EV series work? Could somebody tell me? Because those look pretty cool too. :)

Just dont say I didnt warn you if the US gov comes a knocking. ;)

And while I agree that patents are somewhat ridiculous, they are there for a good reason, one that will last quite a while.

Yeah, I totally understand them - and you did warn me. But, I'm going to modify the design a good amount just to be safe...

More baffles, different shape possibly, but I'm sure they didn't patent water spraying into water... If they did, I'm going to patent water being sprayed into the air... then nobody can do that anymore.

the injector was the only part they did patent. Your free to copy the rest of the design. You cant patent something if its already in existance, so no patenting of spraying water into the air. :D

Heres patent #1- http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&Sect2=HITOFF&d=PALL&p=1&u=/netahtml/srchnum.htm&r=1&f=G&l=50&s1=6,156,209.WKU.&OS=PN/6,156,209&RS=PN/6,156,209

and patent #2- http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&Sect2=HITOFF&d=PALL&p=1&u=/netahtml/srchnum.htm&r=1&f=G&l=50&s1=6,436,295.WKU.&OS=PN/6,436,295&RS=PN/6,436,295

Well crap - that sucks.. I COULD patent water spraying into air if it was used for a certain purpose...

Oh well, I'll have to figure something else out...

By the way, the EV series is hands down better than the Remora/Urchin. If I were going to create a skimmer based on 1 of these designs, it would be the EV series.

Sweet - thanks... But, I probably won't be reproducing any patented designs. Too scary legally.. Expecially since I posted it on this board. :)

Expecially since I posted it on this board As a federal employee, I should inform you that I will have to report this thread to the proper authorities.
