I've always been huge into planted freshwater tanks both low light and high light high tech. A few months ago I inherited a reef from a friend who had an algae outbreak that couldnt be fixed without breaking the tank down and starting over. So I re cured the rock for two months and got a 29g nano for free.

Now I've been fighting this internal confict about freshwater vs saltwater. And to be honest, I am completely bored with freshwater plants, fish, and anything associated with them. In fact, im starting to dislike freshwater tanks with each passing day. Its weird because I have a freshwater tank across the room from the saltwater tank and when im in that room I can feel the stares of both fish from each tank. I wonder if the freshwater tank inhabitants know how I REALLY feel.

I understand that most of you on here in this forum are freshwater people so please dont hate me and call me a &**^* jerk.

So, what I want to know is, does this make me a bad person?

Some people like a new challenge, nothing wrong with that. But I don't think I'll ever get sick of my freshwater fish and snails. They make me happy every day.

You sound like myself in the way that you are always progressing forward in a hobby. I started with Fresh like everyone else and progressed into salt and then reef after becoming bored. Sooner or later I dead ended and became burnt out with the hobby as a whole, and finally stopped keeping fish altogether. After a couple years I have just now got back into freshwater and plan to keep it simple and have my wife very involved with our tank.

IMO this is the natural cycle for some people when it comes to hobbies.

I actually started on the marine side of the aquarium hobby. Maybe that is why I still have a continued interest in freshwater, especially well planted systems. I like them both quite a bit and I think a skillfully planted tank can rival even the best reefs. Maybe not in the sheer array of color, but in overall aesthetics, etc. they are certainly capable. But to each his/her own. Nothing wrong with liking one more than the other.

I know what you are saying, I am not losing interest in my fw setups, but am constantly llooking for new challenges. Get what makes you happy out of the hobby. Just because youd on't want to continue wiht fw now doesn't mean you won't later. Good luck with your new adventures though!

definately agree on the skillfully planted tank, but im not very skilled.

Also, I realized (at least with smaller reefs) that daily and weekly maintenance is easier than high tech planted tanks (Ferts). I'd rather dose 2 part every other day than dose NPK, and CSM+B or whatever its called.

I thought you guys were supposed to console me and make me feel better about being a stupid jerk for not liking freshwater anymore!

In all seriousness, I still appreciate the beauty of a nicely scaped planted tank but since im terrible at scaping I guess i lost interest.

I don't see how this makes you a jerk hon, as long as your not neglecting your caretaker responsibilities it's all good. I have both and I'll admit I go through phases of obsessing over one or the other for a few weeks at a time.
