I'm planning on using play sand as a substrate in the 29g I'm currently planning but don't know how much to use. I know with gravel the rule of thumb is 1-1.5 lbs per gallon of tank. I have heard that you shouldn't use as much sand as you would gravel in a tank though and I would imagine that the weights don't line up between sand and gravel.

Here's the tank particulars:

- It will be planted

- It will be home to:
8 danios (if all four of my fry survive)
6 pygmy cories
1 RTBS
1 Bristlenose pleco

- Filtration will come from a Penguin 125 and a H.0.T Magnum (hob type)

How deep should the sand be?

You'll have to pick your plants carefully... sand is more dense than gravel and will have a tendency to crush root systems. I probably have about 30lbs of pool filter sand in my 55gal and it's probably too much for my taste... gives about 1-1.5" thickness on average.
