I just set up a spare 10g with a bag of red flourite, AquaClear mini filter with sponge media, heater with temp of 75, and one tube of florescent lighting. The flourite is about 3" deep.

I rinsed the flourite twice - tried to avoid over-rinsing, and it took almost 24 hrs for the "dust" to settle. And that was with the filter off. If I touch the flourite is produces a small muchroom cloud of dust.

What readily available low light plants should I use that will benifit from the flourite? I won't use CO2, but the corys, neons and dwarf pencilfish should help out in that regard. I will also use FLourish Excel

Thanks!

Most Cryptocoryne's are lower light plants. How many watts per gallon do you have? Anything under 1 wpg and I think you will have a hard time growing anything. Also java fern and anubius are low light plants but would not use the flourite as much as the crypts.

how about planted watersprite? I've had good luck with the broadleafed variety, but not planted.

I do not have any experience with planted watersprite but it will still get most of its nutrients from the water and not the substrate.
