Since this fish contains the labrynith organ through which it breaths, it is not as dependent upon water to live like other fish.
If you removed one from the water, how long would it be able to live? I imagine it would live a very long time and would only die when it dried out, where a normal fish would die fairly quickly because its gills would dry out very quickly.
While I imagine that it could live longer than many other fish I would go so far as to say a very long time. It doesn't take long for the skin and slime coat to dry up. I have heard of them jumping out of their tanks and being on the ground for 15 minutes or so but this isn't something I would want to test.

I've personally seen catfish live after being OUT of the water for more than 12 hours. Gone fishing the night before and left a cat in the grass overnight. Gone back the next day and it was still alive and well...When they ship catfish, they just need to be kept moist . I think they wrap them in paper towels, for transport.

May I ask why you're asking?
I had a betta jump from a bowl. He was completely dried to the floor on discovery. I put some water on him, loosened the fins from the floor, and put him back in. Lived another 5 years.

Just curious. Upon learning that they receive their air in that fashion I just started to wonder.

Had a similar experience to OrionGirl with one of my males while still at uni. Found him on the carpet and thought he was gone. Tried to pick him and he freaked out! Nearly dropped him down the sink actually. :)
Amazing little guys they are.
