View Full Version : Fish for 36 gal tank

There seem to be some differing views on your fish count in your tank, and how much is too much, etc. Right now I have the following fish in my 36 gallon bowfront aquarium:
1 Pearl Gourami
2 Giant Danios
2 Tetras (diff. types)
I want to increase the numbers of these present fish, because they need friends! The rub is that I don't know how many more to get before its overcrowded. Also, if anyone has any other suggestions for different fish, I'd welcome your ideas!
On a side note: I am running a Magnum 350 with Bio-wheel 30 kit, so I would think I could handle a decent bio-load!
So your opinions are welcome on numbers and types of fish. You all seemingly similar ways of determining a number of fish, so the more suggestions I have, the better I can decide!
Thanks!

I would get 3 or 4 more of each type of tetra. They like to be in groups. What types are they, by the way (out of curiosity). You can leave the gourami as a centerpeice fish, or get maybe one more. I don't know if they like to be with other gouramies. Giant danios..... maybe 1 or 2 more? I'm not sure how big they get, but if they are bigger than the tetras i would suggest not having more of them.
Is your tank planted?
I would also consider some cories as bottom feeders.
I've always followed the 1" of fish per gallon rule. Its a generalization and if you have good filtration, as you do, then that rule should easily apply. (For freshwater community fish).
:)
1 more giant danio would be fine as they get to be 3 inches or so I believe. Then bring each type of tetra up to 3 each as they will just end up schooling together anyway. And add a smallish type of bottom feeder. Either 4-5 dwarf cories, some small loaches or a nice fly fox (they get to be close to 5 inches and IMO are a fun fish to watch). If there are no foxes then I would say a couple of SAE's. But cories would really fit well with your scheme.
The 1 inch per gallon should fit fairly well with your current fish selection as none are heavy waste producers.

My thought's were about the same as LMK and Fresh with the possibility of Clown Loaches instead of cory's (I like Both)
One thing I like to do is...
sit there and look at the tank with the "fish load in mind"... and imagine the power just went out! And think about how long there gonna last.
You really need a 4 foot tank to house clown loaches. They get big, 8-12 inches or so.

from my experience and from what i read here yesterday(somewhere) they tend to stay a decent size for the inviroment there in.
that why I mentioned them.

3-5 cories
3 kuhli loaches
6 whitecloud minnow or small tetras
pair of blue rams or gold rams
i think that woul look great!
pick a few really interesting fish!
or maybe you like gouramis you could get 2 or 3 of them

~*LuvMyKribs*~, my tetras are black neon and head and tail light.
Thanks for the suggestions, chances are after I get my present fish some buddies, I will get at least one of the types you suggested. I tried cories unsuccessfully a while back (something happened to its mouth, and did not survive...) always willing to take another try at them though. I like the clown loach, but it seems like my tank is a bit small for them.
But since I have a strong filter, I can go inches = gallons? Sounds simple enough for me :)

my favorite fish the german blue ram, unlike most chiclids they are peaceful
and can easily go in the community aquarium

Thanks everyone,
I really like the Rams, hopefully I can find them in good condition at the LFS.
I'd like to get some cories and loaches though, any suggestions on particular fish?
I like the clown loaches, but I am not sure I want a fish that will get to 6" rather quickly in my tank, because I don't anticipate a tank upgrade until I move. But I'd still like a shoal of loaches for eventual snail control. Any other loaches that are good in the community aquarium with tetras and danios?
Khulies, yoyo maybe golden. Stay clear of the weather loach as it is cold water. And try to get a minimum of three, more is better and that is wht the khulies are great for smaller tanks. You can get a bunch of them.

Tkos, I have read conflicting things about the Yo-yo. Is it semi-aggressive or not? I have read that it is and that it isn't. I was interested in that but a bit confused by the differing opinions.

My experience with yoyo's is that if there is only one or two they will be agressive towards other fish but if there is atleast a group of 3 they will squabble with each other and leave the other fish alone.

I have 3 yoyos in with cardinal tetras and harlequin rasboras without a problem. There are other fish in the tank too, like swords, rainbowfish, dwarf gourami and most recently a small angelfish. Everyone does fine together.

I tend to like the bandit and skunk cories but it's all a matter of personal taste. I have many types of tetras and they do just fine with a trio of each. In fact, I have a better schooling affect with 3 neon's than when I had 9. Most of the tetras stay to themselves except the cardinals and neon's seem to intermingle. Kyle
