Just got a 5g acrylic tank over the weekend that is currently housing some red cherry shrimps and was wondering if I can add some crabs into the mix?
If not I might just settle for some bubblebee gobies or something along that line.

1) Fiddler crabs are not "true-aquatics".
2) It will not eat shrimps unless they are already dead.

Red claw crabs are also brackish. If you want to add fully aquatic, shrimp safe, freshwater crabs I would look into thai micro crabs.

Those crabs are not fully aquatic and need a land area. They are also brackish water animal. In my experiance the red claw will eat anything it can catch, so you shimp would be at risk. Fiddlers would be less likly to kill the shrimp but they should not be put in that tank. If you really would like a crab there is one freshwater species I can think of off the top of my head. It is called a mini or micro crab and is a true aquatic, it is also very small and would not be a danger to you shrimp. If you are interested in the other crabs your best bet is to set up a five or ten gallon tank. There are a couple ways you can do this. One way is to do at least 1/2-2/3 land, the rest water. You can use crushed coral sand and will need seasalt too for the brackish water. A small heater to keep the temp around 80-83F and a sponge filter. You will also want to have the top covered to help keep the humidity up. The other way is to use some type of sand(keep it moist at all times) and a large water bowl. Bury the bowl upto the rim and put rocks inside so the crab can easily get out. An under tank heater would work well on this kind of set up and make sure to keep the humidity high.

Thanks for the great responses everyone.
Might order a few mini/micro crabs from aquabid and see how things go. Meanwhile I went and picked up 4x threadfin rainbows today to add to the setup:headbang2:. Will try to get pix of setup soon.
Thanks again

Yup, micro crabs would be great. I've been thinking about setting up a tank for them also.

I think everyone addressed all that was necessary. :) If you can wait, MsJinkzd (Rachel) tries to have Thai Micro Crabs whenever she can. She just sold out of her current batch a couple weeks ago. I would try to touch base with her and see when she'll have more in as I think it's more cost effective and you won't have to worry about customs, live arrival, etc with her since she's U.S. based. Good luck! :)

Thanks
There was some on aquabid the other day but checked again last night and there weren't any.
I'll just wait for MsJinkzd
Both types of crabs will try to catch the shrimp but unless they are sleeping or very sick, they don't come even CLOSE to ever catching one. I have ghost shrimp with both types this very moment living harmoniously with the shrimp.
