hey guys, my bristlenose cats are moving out and im hoping to replace them with an attractive cichlid of some sort. dont necissarily ahve a to large, just attractive. if i cant get a shoal of any kind together im jsut goign to stock it with rainbow fish :)

If you want to go with a large group of cichlids, I would say to go with africans. You can keep many in a tank that size and they are VERY colorful. I'm sorry to tell you that I know nothing about africans as I only keep CA/SA cichlids.

The africans will be way better than rainbows IMO.

african's being, malawi, tanganyika?
i was looking at calvus, would they be ok in there ?

Personally I would go with two pairs of german blue rams or a couple of trios of shell dwellers. both have very unique behavior and both very beautiful. JMO

That tank would be too small for most varieties of african cichlids. Shell dwellers would be a good choice, though.

From what I have read, shell dwellers are ok, and so are most of the julidochromis species. In fact, I am considering to setup a mix of one of the shell dwellers and one of the julidochromis in a 33g tank which is only 36"x12".

I would only stick with one type of shell dweller. Some are colony formers like N.multies, that would be really cool to watch this behaviour in a larger tank.
