I was at a guy's house checking out his fish room. In one of the tanks he had a Tang eel. I asked some questions but I don't remember the name at all. It was one of the most active and interactive eels I had ever seen. He was right out in the open swimming around and checking me out. Since my mbuna would not be happy with this addition I'm in no position to get one now. But perhaps in the future. I've been trying to look up info on them but I have't had much luck.
Does anyone know the scientific names for some of the more common ones?

species name i believe is ellipsifer

They may be listed under Aethiomastacembelus as well. The most common Tang eel is the elipsifer, but plagiostoma are generally more active IME. They don't burrow in the substrate either. There are also several other species occaisonally available, but not generally active, visible fish.

Hmmm I've seen them listed as mastacembelus plagiostoma and mastacembelus elipsifer, no afro prefix.

oh wait. nvm, its the plagistomas that i was talking about price wise. the ellipsifer it think are more common. they are cool, ive considered getting one for my tang tanks in the past. but feeding them is a problem as they arnt exactly an 'outgoing' fish. you have to special feed them or else the food wont get to them....

In my experience with eels, they have all been quite active and interactive with me... my striped peacock eel always comes up to the glass when i get home almost like he is coming to say hello and swims laps in the middle of the tank all day
